Another part of the celebration has more recently included inviting the other International Stations around The Continent to join in the celebration and wish greetings to them. Of course, this is impossible given that we are all bound to our stations; particularly on this side of white dead place, but this all contributes to the dry and cynical humor we enjoy here.Our fearless NSF (National Science Foundation) Representative, Bill, sent out the McMurdo greeting today:
Mid-Winter Greetings All,
The 2009 Winter Crew of McMurdo Station extends congratulations to all people of the wintering bases and stations in Antarctica for reaching the mid point of winter. We hope your season has been, and will continue to be professionally and personally rewarding.
On June 20th starting at 1730 McMurdo begins celebrating the mid point of the season with pre-dinner appetizers followed by Mid-Winter dinner at 1830. Members of Scott Base have been invited and if any one else is passing by McMurdo we welcome you to join us at any time during the evening. If you are not here for the dinner we will offer a toast in your absence.

Nice announcement! The photo at the top, is it current? In the foreground there looks like an old sailing vessel along the shore. Has that been there several years?
It is interesting since this is your mid point of winter in the southern hemisphere, this is the period of time that we have the most severe weather here in the northern hemisphere around Nebraska and South Dakota in the US.
I like the fact that Jed 'Killer' Miller and Captain Awesome make it through the psych portion of the exam. There is hope for me yet!
